A variational formulation of vertical slice models

چکیده

A variational framework is defined for vertical slice models with three-dimensional velocity depending only on x and z. The models that result from this framework are Hamiltonian, and have a Kelvin– Noether circulation theorem that results in a conserved potential vorticity in the slice geometry. These results are demonstrated for the incompressible Euler– Boussinesq equations with a constant temperature gradient in the y-direction (the Eady–Boussinesq model), which is an idealized problem used to study the formation and subsequent evolution of weather fronts. We then introduce a new compressible extension of this model. Unlike the incompressible model, the compressible model does not produce solutions that are also solutions of the threedimensional equations, but it does reduce to the Eady–Boussinesq model in the low Mach number limit. Hence, the new model could be used in asymptotic limit error testing for compressible weather models running in a vertical slice configuration.

Non-Fourier heat conduction equation in a sphere; comparison of variational method and inverse Laplace transformation with exact solution

Small scale thermal devices, such as micro heater, have led researchers to consider more accurate models of heat in thermal systems. Moreover, biological applications of heat transfer such as simulation of temperature field in laser surgery is another pathway which urges us to re-examine thermal systems with modern ones. Non-Fourier heat transfer overcomes some shortcomings of Fourier heat tran...

Horizontal circulation and jumps in Hamiltonian wave models

We are interested in the modeling of wave-current interactions around surf zones at beaches. Any model that aims to predict the onset of wave breaking at the breaker line needs to capture both the nonlinearity of the wave and its dispersion. We have therefore formulated the Hamilto5 nian dynamics of a new water wave model, incorporating both the shallow water and pure potential flow water wave ...

Dynamic Contact Problem for Viscoelastic von Kármán-Donnell Shells

We deal with initial-boundary value problems describing vertical vibrations of viscoelastic von Kármán-Donnell shells with a rigid inner obstacle. The short memory (Kelvin-Voigt) material is considered. A weak formulation of the problem is in the form of the hyperbolic variational inequality. We solve the problem using the penalization method.

Solvent effects in time-dependent self-consistent field methods. II. Variational formulations and analytical gradients.

This study describes variational energy expressions and analytical excited state energy gradients for time-dependent self-consistent field methods with polarizable solvent effects. Linear response, vertical excitation, and state-specific solvent models are examined. Enforcing a variational ground state energy expression in the state-specific model is found to reduce it to the vertical excitatio...

Geometric Discretization of Nonholonomic Systems with Symmetries

The paper develops discretization schemes for mechanical systems for integration and optimization purposes through a discrete geometric approach. We focus on systems with symmetries, controllable shape (internal variables), and nonholonomic constraints. Motivated by the abundance of important models from science and engineering with such properties, we propose numerical methods specifically des...
